Cascadia Seminar Call for Abstracts

In 2017 I organized and hosted the Cascadia Seminar in Medical Anthropology and this year it is hosted by the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada on November 19 & 20, 2019. Dr. Vinay Kamat (UBC Host) and Dr. Susan Erikson (SFU) are expecting a strong turnout since it is timed with the 2019 AAA/CASCA Annual Meeting in Vancouver.

I recommend this conference. The long seminar format makes for strong presentations and great discussion. I presented back in 2015 when I was new to the area and it was a wonderful opportunity to meet Cascadia region scholars (along with the 8 or ten individuals that came from across the US… and I think a few from Australia).

Below is the Call for Abstracts, though you can always head directly to the site for more details.

Abstract Deadline: September 1, 2019

The 2019 Cascadia Seminar-Vancouver will bring together 50-60 people interested in exploring cutting-edge medical anthropology topics at the University of British Columbia (UBC) in a seminar setting. This relatively small, intimate, low cost conference will take time to deeply explore a small number of ethnographically grounded papers which have been competitively peer-reviewed for their cutting-edge applications and/or intellectual provocations.

The 2019 Cascadia Seminar-Vancouver is scheduled to take place during the two days (Nov 19 & 20, 2019) before the Joint Canadian Anthropology Society and the international annual American Anthropological Association Conference in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, November 20-24, 2019. The seminar is organized collaboratively by medical anthropologists on faculty at several different universities and colleges in the US Pacific Northwest and British Columbia (the Cascadia region).

The Seminar is free, though preregistration will be required in order to keep numbers manageable. https://forms.gle/bqwQpDrEay1YzB2A6 Participants pay for their own travel, room and board. A block of rooms will be available at a reduced rate at a hotel located on UBC campus.

Day 1 will begin the morning of November 19, 2019, with a keynote address by medical anthropologist Dr. Robert Lorway, Canada Research Chair, University of Manitobahttp://umanitoba.ca/faculties/health_sciences/medicine/units/chs/faculty_and_staff/4250.html). Four additional papers will be presented on Tuesday November 19th with no concurrent sessions. Each Day 1 paper presenter will have forty minutes to present a substantial, well worked-out paper, with ample time for lively discussion. Beverages and snacks on both days, as well as a light lunch on Tuesday the 19th, will be provided. Day 2, Wednesday November 20th, will run 9am – noon, with two rounds of 10-minute lightening presentations by medical anthropologists currently conducting research.

Medical anthropologists (from everywhere) are invited to submit abstracts. Please send your abstract (350 words maximum) by September 1, 2019, as an electronic attachment to cascadiaseminar@gmail.com. Indicate which session, Day 1, 40-min or Day 2, 10-min session, you would like to be considered for. Abstracts will be reviewed by a committee of medical anthropologists on faculty at our various Cascadia region institutions, all of whom also plan to attend. The committee will select abstracts, seeking work that promises to be ethnographically rich and intellectually exciting. Decisions will be announced by September 15, 2019.
